Are sustainable buildings expensive?

The cost premium to deliver sustainable properties to the market is low compared to the savings realised during the use of the building

A small increase in construction costs ...

Professionals in the construction sector tend to estimate the cost of constructing a green building to be 17% higher than the cost of building a conventional structure. In fact, this estimate is over three times higher than the real figure, which is only about 5%! This misunderstanding is a major obstacle to the construction of environmentally-friendly buildings. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the W.B.C.S.D in the context of the "Energy Efficient Buildings" project.

... highly compensated by savings and advantages all over the use phase

The ownership of sustainable buildings results in clear benefits for investors, ranging from drastically lower operating costs to improved marketability, longer useful life-spans, significantly increased occupant productivity and well-being as well as more stable cash-flows which in turn have economically quantifiable benefits. As a result, increasing economic return, sustaining the natural environment and protecting social values are not incompatible; at least not within property and construction markets.

Making a building sustainable is one of the best investments that you can make today !
